bottom-tuning

Posting about wooden paddles got me thinking. So much of a person's pain threshold has to do with familiarity. As I was discussing with Ludwig in a comment thread recently, familiarity with your play partner, and trust in them, is a huge factor. Familiarity with the scenario is another, although I guess that's counterbalanced by the thrill associated with fear of the unknown. But for me, familiarity with an implement is hugely significant.

My favourite implement is the cane. I think it works both ways: I like the cane, so I'm more likely to be caned than anything else; and the more I'm caned the more I like it. Part of that is knowing I can take it, having the experience to trust myself to let go and accept what's happening to me. Canings affect me deeply but they don't freak me out. I'm very at home with the implement, and however horrible it is at the time, being aware intellectually that I've done this before and it's okay does tend to help. (I haven't, however, been caned to the standards of Lupus or Mood Pictures. I keep going back and forth on whether I'd want to. Part of me would want one of my Doms to do it if anyone was going to - another part of me would want the experience to be "worth something", to be as part of a story as rich as the ones Lupus create. Maybe I'll make my own severe caning film, someday.)

So my inability to take a real paddling has nothing to do with my basic pain threshold. I've been taken pretty deep in the past. It's to do with the type of pain, my body's reaction to it, and how used to it I am. Part of processing pain is shock. The shock of something unfamiliar is much more powerful than the shock of something familiar. Part of the terror of the paddle, for me, is not knowing what to expect.

To me, this would seem to tie into the fear of canes you often see in spankees who are used to the paddle. It's a different sort of pain. It's unfamiliar, it's scary, and your bottom is less used to taking it and processing it and healing from it. As such, an unfamiliar implement used on an experienced bottom is often like being a newbie again. You have to go through the whole learning process again every time you encounter a new kind of sensation.

It occured to me that this process, of familiarising certain bottoms with certain implements (and simultaneously rendering them unexpectedly vulnerable to unfamiliar ones) could be thought of as "tuning". And it's not just canes and paddles, although the American/British school conventions have created an obvious binary. I know subs who can fly from a flogging but shy away from more traditional spanko implements. Anne Rice's Beauty trilogy is full of severe beatings with leather straps and wooden paddles because those are what the author was most familiar with, but there's nary a crop or cane in sight. And I know spankos whose comfort-zone is hand-spanking, plain and simple, and who dislike "harder" implements but can probably take a far harder hand-spanking than I could.

I've certainly been "tuned" to different implements at different points in my life. Which makes me wonder whether it's a question of circumstance - that a bottom is tuned to whichever implements are most readily available when they first start playing, and then re-tuned to whatever is used on them most often - or preference? Do some people just like different sensations and experiment till they discover what they like best? Will I always be tuned to canes, or would be it be possible to re-tune me, teach me to take those severe paddlings I fantasise about? Or is the effect cumulative, and being tuned to an implement doesn't expire when you're tuned to another one?

I doubt I'll ever be tuned to heavy wooden paddles: Mr C. believes that repeated use numbs the nerve endings of the bottom, and he wants to keep me as sensitive as possible. (Although Bailey's self-confessed vulnerability after years of heavy paddlings would suggest that isn't always the case.) And besides, if I was tuned to them, they wouldn't be horrifying any more. And where's the fun in that?

  1. I would suggest that it also has something to do with the circumstances under which a person has experienced a certain implement. I know that Cookie, the bottom most often spoken about in my own spanking blog, hates the hairbrush, though she enjoys paddles. Her tolerance for the implement isn't limited by her experiences with it, though, because she receives it often enough. However, the very first time that she felt it, it was used as punishment, and it's been that way ever since. Thus, she associates the brush with punishment, and her resulting tolerances are lowered when facing the dread implement.

Hi Pandora, I think it would be amazing to see you take it to another level with a severe caning movie like Lupus or Mood Pictures....it would definitely be a 'must-see' for me !
    All the best,
    Mark

  4. The concept of "tuning" is certainly interesting. I haven't thought about it before, but I think it makes quite a bit of sense.

Speaking for myself, I'm a top, so I don't have as much experience, in terms of quantity, of receiving the implements. But I switch sometimes, and I've tried a lot of them - usually the cane, but also wooden paddles, leather paddles, crops, different whips, hand spankings... So I've felt a reasonable range of implements myself.

Of all of them, wooden paddles were the most unpleasant. Not because of the pain - I've been caned a lot harder, one time it was definitely in the Lupus / Mood region of severity and left me with broken skin, so that was definitely worse. It wasn't really about the unfamiliarity, either.

I just disliked the *quality*, the particular kind of pain that the wooden paddle caused. I didn't find it interesting, for lack of a better word. The sting of the cane or whip is a lot more interesting to me than the thud of a paddle.

I had a leather paddle once that was more interesting, had a bit of a sting to it. I liked using that one on my girlfriend - always as a warmup for the cane, but still...

My preference also has to do with the fact that part of me is visually oriented, and I just don't like the marks left by wooden paddles. Leather paddles are a bit better in this regard. But of course, nothing looks as sexy and intoxicating as cane stripes.

  5. Thomas - Yes, that's a very perceptive comment. I know that when my Thomas first started using a wooden hairbrush on me it was entirely in the context of punishment, and he was uncompromising with it. It meant that an implement which had always had a powerful place in my fantasies quickly became something I hated in real life. These days, it's mostly used for erotic play and I've regained my love of it (although I'm still afraid of it, knowing what it can do!)

Mark - thanks for the vote of confidence :) If I do it would be Lupus ... at present I'm more interested in the idea of making my own severe caning movie with my own Dom, if I could ever get a budget together for it. Maybe I should write to a few film companies and see if they're interested :) I'd get the personal satisfaction of having taken it to the next level, without having to leave my comfort zone. Definitely a plausible intermediary stage before I braved the werewolves from the East!

I would never want to make more than a handful of such films in my lifetime ... I'd want each one to be a personal landmark, and if I played at that level regularly I'd be worried about the risk of permanent damage/desensitisation. Plus my other Dom, D, doesn't like me to be marked ... and marks from Lupus canings last several months even on experienced spanking models like Niki Flynn and Adele Haze. I wouldn't want to do that to him more than once in a blue moon!

Anyway, I like being afraid of moderate canings, still! I don't want to up my own ante permanently. Being a bit of a wimp has its advantages ;)

Ludwig - I definitely agree with you on paddles, even from my limited experience. The all-over, shocking *blat* of it lacks finesse. It's hot as hell because it's so uncompromising, but in terms of subtle eroticism, canes, crops and whips are far more interesting to me personally. Besides which I like implements that are flexible, and I haven't yet found anything more flexible than a cane. (And no, I don't mean flexible in the "whippy" sense!)

I actually really really like the sensation of leather paddles, but they've always seemed like a "pleasure" implement in my head - I mean who historically punished someone with a leather paddle? - and therefore less interesting. I should reconcile myself to my erotic masochism sometime and actually buy one, because I think I'd enjoy having one used on me more often :)

I'm intoxicated by the bulls-eye marks of wooden paddles simply because I've never been given any. The allure of the unexplored, and all that.
