spanked for being "slutty"

In my interview the other day I said that part of producing "feminist" spanking porn is about presenting kink and sexuality in a positive, affirming way – so no women being spanked for being “slutty”, or anyone being made to feel ashamed for their sexuality.

I was trying to sum up some very complicated issues in a very short answer, so I wasn't surprised when I got an email asking me to clarify what I meant:

If we're talking about a spanking scene or fantasy, what's wrong with being spanked for being slutty? Being sexually active is a good thing so in the context of the fantasy perhaps the spankee is getting treated unfairly or unjustly. If we agree that the right and proper way to raise children and solve debates in the real world is probably not through spanking, then spanking is both unfair and unjust. It's this inequality (sub vs Dom) that makes it sexy in play/fantasy/movies? I think you can still have that as the "spanked for being slutty" scenario without making the statement that sexual freedom is wrong!?

I think this might be simpler if I describe the sort of attitude I had in mind when I wrote my original statement. Imagine a spanking porn producer who churns out tonnes of content, often without a satisfactory storyline or rounded characters. Most of the models are chosen for being young, white, skinny and inexperienced, rather than for their acting ability or love of spanking. The producer takes no care to remember or correctly spell models' names, and in the marketing materials no distinction is made between the model and the character they were playing in a particular scene. The adverts are, if you like, all "in character". So when the character is described as dirty, filthy, bratty, naughty, or called a brat, minx, slut, or whore, those words are applied to the model as well.

I'm not a whore, or a brat. I'm not dirty or filthy or naughty. I'm not a mischievous little minx or a misbehaving child. I'm an adult woman who deserves the respect you would give to any other professional.

Take another example. A spanking producer shoots a scene in which a spanking model misbehaves on a spanking shoot. She has to be spanked on set and - gosh, who would have thought it? - the cameras are still running. How realistic! How gritty! You might roll your eyes, but this seems to be a favourite scenario which is returned to by loads of producers. The result is that the model - the hard working professional who has been busting a gut all day to earn the respect of this producer - is plastered all over the Internet with accompanying text saying what a naughty little minx she is, ruining the shoot - dreadful behaviour - how dare she! Such unprofessionalism clearly needs dealing with! It's a good job the spanker was on hand to teach this little madam a well deserved lesson!

I know that when I've just finished a hard spanking shoot, when I'm knackered and getting a late flight or train home and about to suffer a huge endorphine crash, when I've worked as hard as I could to do a good job and make life easier for the people I'm working with, the very last thing I want is to read fake marketing materials pretending I was unprofessional and deserved to be punished for real on the shoot.

No-one gets to punish me for real except my Doms, and even then only in specific, carefully-negotiated circumstances. This boundary exists for my safety, and the professional contract between me and a spanking producer does not give them the right to fuck with it.

In both the above examples, a spanking producer has failed to define the "in character" and "out of character" boundary satisfactorily. The message this sends is that the producer does not respect their models, and does not consider their models to have any personality or presence worthy of attention out of scene. All the best producers - and you know who you are! - make a clear distinction between a model and the character she or he plays. In scene, by all means, refer to the character however you like, as long you negotiate it beforehand and everyone involved consents; but out of scene, a good producer will always treat their models like human beings, and talk about them with respect.

Spanking models work very hard to maintain the boundaries between acting and reality. We spend hours every week fighting off creepy emails from people who think we "deserve" to be punished, telling us how naughty we are, that we need some lonely dude to come and "teach us a lesson". We don't. We are intelligent, feeling adults who enjoy playing roles - and we define the boundaries of those roles, not you.

Women who are open about their sexuality have always been called sluts and whores. Some women have reclaimed the words and given them a positive slant. To understand how this works, think about the word "pervert". You might call yourself a pervert, and be totally fine with that. But how would you feel if a tabloid article called you a "filthy pervert" and implied that you were a sick sadist who abused people against their will? That's how we feel when people call us "slut" or "whore" outside the context of a negotiated, consensual scene. It's nothing like using the word in a safe space, between people we trust.

The tabloid in my example has trampled on your personal boundaries, taken things out of context, and implied a level of non-consent in your interactions which would be completely horrific in real life. Calling a spanking model a "filthy whore" because, for instance, she did a scene in which her character was spanked for masturbating, has the same effect. It removes the conversation from the safe, negotiated space of the scene, and applies the same language in a real-world, non-consensual context. It implies that rather than playing a naughty little girl who doesn't know better, the spanking model is a naughty little girl who doesn't know better, rather than a grown woman capable of defining her own boundaries.

I've mostly used the language of female spankees above, but the problem is even worse in malesub films. Submissive actors are referred to as "filthy slave" or "fat pig"; they are treated with as much disrespect in the marketing materials as they are on the shoot; they often aren't named or given any praise for the hard work they've done or suffering they've endured.

Any model who has been violently beaten in order to help make the porn you're enjoying deserves your respect. Producers who use language which objectifies and degrades their own models encourage the users to think of them as objects rather than whole human beings. To move towards a more feminist, gender egalitarian, sexism-free porn industry it is essential that producers present their models in a way which celebrates their humanity, hard work and professionalism. If producers distinguish between the naughty little boy who deserves a spanking in this hot clip, and the brilliant actor who was fantastic on the shoot, it will encourage users to make the same distinction, and that can only be good for the health of our society as a whole.

So while it might be okay to film a scene where the character was caught sleeping around, or masturbating, and was punished for being "slutty", it is absolutely not okay for this fiction to in any way be extended to the models who participated. It is the responsibility of producers to define the boundary between in character and out of character. You can always tell how well a producer treats their models on set by how they talk about them in their publicity materials, and models quickly learn to steer clear of studios which talk about their models as if they were worthless, two-dimensional characters.

In the context of female spankees, I also have a personal issue with the specific scenario of "being spanked for being slutty". Our society still sends the message through media, entertainment, literature and advertising that women can be virgins or whores but nothing in between; that if a woman is interested in sex, she cannot also be an intelligent, strong, interesting person. Our society still perpetuates the idea that if a woman is "slutty" (i.e. interested in sex) she loses the right to define her own sexual boundaries; if she is raped or sexually assaulted she "deserved" it, or at least would not be able to prove her rape in court, which sends the same message in practice. Women are punished every day by our society for enjoying sex. This is still a huge problem, and if you aren't aware of it, you aren't looking hard enough.

I don't feel it would be responsible or appropriate to make scenes which play on that injustice while it is still something that damages my life. Until I am no longer punished for having a sexuality by the world I live in, I'm unlikely to want to play similar games for my own amusement. Too many people still subscribe to this belief for me to want to produce fiction which propagates it. "Slut" is a hugely problematic category and if you're trying to produce feminist porn, you need to be very careful about distinguishing between fiction and reality. If I ever did produce a film along these lines (and heaven knows, there are far more interesting, original scenarios I could use!) I would almost certainly want to talk or blog about the social context, so I'm not just buying into the meme that female sexuality should be suppressed and women who express it should be punished.

I'm not setting myself up as the feminist police, so if you're a spankee and you find playing games that play on you being "slutty" enjoyable, all power to you. I hope it is an empowering and affirming experience. I know exactly where the emotional impact comes from - I like my partners to call me a "slut" in bed, sometimes. That works for me because I know that they know they don't think of me as a slut, they don't think my sexual expression compromises my right to be treated like a human being. But no-one has the right to make that call other than the spankee. You don't get to call someone a "slut" just because they're into spanking, or enjoy sex, or model for adult films, unless they have explicitly given you permission to do so.

Films are a public space, and the way I see it, I have a responsibility to the women I share this society with not to propagate ideas that will make life harder for all of us. That's one of the main reasons I keep this blog - to make the boundary between in and out of character as explicit as possible.

Kinky fantasies are all based on scenarios of abuse and injustice which would be unacceptable in real life. When those injustices are currently affecting the lives of the participants, I don't think it's okay for porn to unquestioningly trot out the same stereotypes and out-dated ideas. If I filmed a scene which perpetuated the damaging stereotype that sexually active women are "sluts" who deserve to be "punished", I would be sure to somehow challenge, twist or critique this idea to encourage people not to take the scenario at face value.

Basically, you may know that female sexual expression is affirming and healthy, and I may know that, but until our society stops sending the opposite message, I don't think it's safe to assume that the viewer knows that. Statistically speaking, your viewers most likely include some misogynists who think that any woman who sleeps around or enjoys kink is a filthy little whore who deserves everything she gets. A feminist producer should avoid publishing anything in such as a way as to validate those creeps' point of view, or give the impression that the producer thinks the same.

If, say, your top is clearly presented as a horrible villain, and the viewer is meant to sympathise with the spankee, and the language in your publicity materials clearly maintains the boundary between in character and out of it, and the model is given a space to speak in their own voice about how hot they found the scene, and it's made clear that neither producer, nor top, nor viewer endorse the ideas expressed in the scene, then I think it would be possible to produce this scenario in a feminist way. But most of the producers who regularly use this scenario don't do that, and that's why it bothers me.

new blogs to read

I've found a number of awesome new blogs lately. Well, not new, but new to me. They aren't all about spanking, but Bonnie already keeps a comprehensive list of new spanking blogs, so there's no point duplicating her excellent efforts! Still, I hope you find something here to enjoy.

Woolf and Wilde
Vintage photos of m/m or f/f couples, with accompanying creative text (often taken from a similar period of history). This doesn't update often, but is incredibly pleasing. There are only two lesbian entries so far, but I adore both of them.

Ideas on Sexual Politics

Some light reading for the weekend. This article by Anna Arrowsmith explains her approach to making pornography for women, and why she believes her work to be empowering and affirming for both participants and viewers.

Before adult imagery can be condemned as exploitative in totality, there are a few things to consider. What about those who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender? Representation of their sexuality and experience of sex was, for a long time, wholly inaccessible and they felt they lacked a cinematic identity. Now we have a thriving and inclusive media sector where people no longer feel like outsiders or imperfect by default. From business to arts to health; we are better informed than ever before. Maybe those who believe porn is all about women being exploited by men should watch some of the excellent dyke porn currently being made in the US. This is a gender group that was wholly unrepresented in any medium until a small number of filmmakers started to make their own films. The directors, crew and performers all come from their own community and are politically driven. They are making films for a very limited demographic but their work is allowing women to access a completely new representation of gender and sexuality that is empowering.

If I was her constituent, she would have my vote. You can read the rest of her essay Ideas on Sexual Politics here.

my interview at SpankPlace

It took me nearly two months to reply to the fabulous interview questions SpankPlace sent me, but they posted my answers within two hours of my replying. I am properly humbled. Also quite pleased, because otherwise I wouldn't have time to write a blog post today, and this means I can post it while it's still fresh. Many thanks to SpankPlace for such lovely questions! I hope they're as interesting to read as they were to answer :)

When was your first spanking? How did you get into it? What turned you on to it?

I’m going to have to answer these separately, I think. I don’t know what turned me on to spanking, but I know that fantasising about kinky stuff was one of my very first memories, and I was very aware of my secret desires all through my childhood. I was first turned on to spanking at a very young age. By the time I started school my guilty interest in it was already fully formed.

My first consensual spanking experience was actually as a top. When I was 13 my best friend was 15, and she and I used to fool around. We never dated, but there were lots of clandestine caresses after lights out. She preferred to play roleplay games – I guess she felt safer being in character than accepting that she might be bisexual or gay – and one night, one of our roleplays led to spanking. I initiated it and I put her over my knee. She let me smack her a few times, but she was very nervous in case her parents (who were asleep in the same house, would you believe!) overheard, so I stopped and let her up. I found it very hot, but at the same time I knew that what I wanted most was to be spanked myself."

'Handcuffs' by Erika Lust

A short while ago my friend J mentioned to me that he and his partner had watched Erika Lust's short film Handcuffs, and been completely blown away by it. I saw it for the first time yesterday, and I have to say I agree. This is one of the most stylish, sensual, tense, beautifully filmed porn films I've ever seen - the only other producer I'm familiar with who comes close in terms of style is Restrained Elegance.

Handcuffs doesn't have any spanking in it, but if you enjoy restraint, voyeurism, D/s and blowjobs in bondage, you will almost certainly find it hot. And even if not, it's a shining example of the aesthetic standards it's possible for porn studios to aspire to.

porn for women

I really enjoyed these paragraphs on the complications of producing porn for women in this in-depth review of Filament magazine:

The question isn't whether women want porn but what sort of porn to give them. That whole business of women not being "visual" has always rubbed me the wrong way (heh) and in today's highly interactive environment, we are all increasingly attuned to imagery. I've held that if women were provided with smut that didn't insult our intelligence or mistake us for gay men, we would be consumers as avid as our male counterparts. So what sort of porn might fit this bill?

Men have been acculturated to find a stereotypical female attractive: a petite, young, slender blonde with big boobs. Mind you, this is a generalization; thankfully plenty of men appreciate women of all shapes and sizes. But women's taste in men is all over the map: older or younger, slender or beefy, muscular or androgynous, hirsute or hairless. So who to photograph for a porn pictorial? And, correspondingly, whose fantasies to depict?

These questions have fascinating implications for spanking porn, where the norms are somewhat different. We are used to seeing a much wider range of female spanking models than male, and while there are several attractive male tops and bottoms, very little spanking porn presents the male actors as objects of desire. Is there as much variety in the physical type of male bottom or male top that kinky women find attractive as for our vanilla counterparts?

In my communicatons with Ms. Singh, the first thing I wanted to know was how sales were going. "Sales have been growing steadily with each issue," she informed me. "It's a killingly difficult market; we're trying to give something to women that they're constantly being told they shouldn't want, so it was never going to be easy."

I too am aiming to provide something to women that they're constantly being told they shouldn't want - visual female-gaze erotica where the men are there to be looked at as much as the women.

In my case, however, I also believe that this will be appealing to kinky men, especially male bottoms who are frustrated with the characterless, unjust representation they get in most spanking porn. I don't expect it to be easy, either. But I do think it will be worth it.

being in prison

It's hard being in prison. I should know, I've been here since January 2007. My original sentence was only 12 months; in the meantime various misdemeanours must have earned me extra time, because I'm definitely still here. (This is why it's difficult for me to reply to emails, or to update my blog every day - it's hard to keep up when you have to beg or bribe minutes on a contraband iPhone from a cellmate.)

They force me to spend most of my time in solitary, doing stupid menial labour, or in my bunk, hiding from my cellmates who all hate me. Unjustly branded a "thief" in my first week, the guards stood me halfway up the ladder to my top bunk, bent me double over the top of it, and thrashed me until I confessed to stealing the lipstick that had gone missing from a fellow inmates' locker.

I hadn't stolen it. I held out as long as I could. In the end, after one strap had been broken on me and my arse was swollen and purple, I told them what they wanted to hear. I didn't cry, though. I never gave them that satisfaction.

Later, in solitary, I had a long time to dwell on the unfairness of my situation. And since then I've had even longer to plan my revenge...

Adele Haze's secret

Adele has just done a fascinating interview for the latest episode of the Spanking Writers' podcast. It's been brewing a long while, and I'm delighted to see that she's finally taken the plunge. It takes courage to come out, whatever the circumstance, but I know that Adele wouldn't have shared this with you if she hadn't been working up to it for some time, and wasn't completely comfortable with sharing these details.

And in response to her thankyou: any time, honey. It was my pleasure. <3

(The new episode also contains the most adorably giggle-worthy repetition of the word "spanking" I've ever heard, but I expect most of you will find the other thing more interesting.)

never enough hours in the day

Yet again work and vanilla commitments are taking over. There's lots happening in my life at the moment, and it's all very exciting - when things are a bit more pinned down I'll hopefully have some news for you all! But in the meantime I'm struggling to keep afloat of my various commitments. (I know, what else is new.) The ironic thing is that my productivity and efficiency have been increasing this year, and I'm now getting more done per day than ever before - but it sometimes feels as if the more I do, the more there is to do.

I got a yummy, unexpected spanking from D yesterday. We were working on some code together, and had just been out walking in the park, enjoying the late afternoon sunshine. As I was at the computer he slipped his warm hands under my t-shirt and ran his palms up and down my sides. I shivered at his touch. He has delightful hands - slender, delicate, smooth-skinned and always dry and hot to the touch. I soon got distracted from what I was doing, and so did he: before I knew it his my tongue was circling the head of his cock.

When he stood up and offered me his hand I was pretty sure we were heading upstairs to fuck, but he had something else in mind. He sat down on my wheeled office chair, which was levered higher than I have it to match his height, and I realised what he was after and leaned over his lap. Given the relative positions of chair and full-length mirror in my room, I found myself face to face with my reflection, and had ample opportunity to study my facial reactions as he spanked me.

I'm not spanked over a chair very often, due to lack of space in my tiny bedsit, so this was a delicious change. I felt delightfully helpless dangling with my legs stretched out behind me. It was an erotic, tingling little spanking - hard enough to make me yelp, not so hard that it ever stopped being fun. After he let me up I was eager to say thankyou.

I'm hoping this summer will bring me many more spankings. Tom and I played an interesting scene last Friday which I've been meaning to write about, although my memory of such heady physical experiences tends to jumble frustratingly fast. And tonight I'm seeing the delicious Penny, so there will be lots to blog about this week, if I can only find time to write it.

a spanking podcast

This is a cool new initiative. Abel and Haron, two friends of mine famous as the Spanking Writers, have just launched their new project - SpankingCast. As far as I'm aware it's the first ever spanking podcast. It's like a self-published radio show; they post an audio file on the blog for users to stream or download.

Abel and Haron's creative energy has been impressive over the last couple of years. They've already published two books as well as launching a re-design of their blog, and now it turns out they've been working on a secret audio project. I'm not sure what's next, but I can bet I'll probably like it.

I suspect their podcast will turn out to be as popular as their blog - it's an excellent way of fostering intimacy with online readers without revealing your face, which Abel and Haron choose not to do. I've toyed with the idea of doing something similar several times over the last few years, although since you all know what I look like I'd be better off producing a video diary for general spanking chatter. Publishing a live audio recording of an actual spanking, however - that's always seemed to me like a worthwhile project. I imagine listening in on a punishment seeming that much more voyeuristic and intense without accompanying visuals.

I don't know if recording actual spanking is in Abel and Haron's plan for future podcasts. (My guess would be not, given their preference for privacy and subtlety in the rest of their projects, but they may yet surprise us.) Either way, I wish them all the best, and many avid listeners.

You can listen to SpankingCast Episode 1: "Into spanking", here. In this debut episode, Abel muses about tolerance and acceptance of kink in society, quoting Matthew Syed from The Times.

putting energy in

When I posted a mini write-up of the birthday caning I got last weekend, I'd intended to write a proper post later in the week to accompany the rest of the photos. Then the workmonster got in the way, and then having sat down to write about the scene, I've ended up rambling about D/s and energy and stress, which wasn't what I'd planned to write about at all...

I'd been thinking about that caning for days. Tom's actual birthday was on Thursday, and I was ready and willing to be taken in hand after our evening at the pub, which was very merry. Belonging to a workaholic with chronic health problems does mean I have to balance my desire to be spanked with my desire to not put any pressure on Tom, however. Beating me for my sake rather than because he actually wants to would be kind of missing the point.

It's sometimes a tricky balancing act, though. After all, I'm a workaholic myself; a chronic insomniac leading several different lives, running two and a half independent businesses - stress and fatigue are part of the daily fabric of my life. When I'm very busy and my head is full of other things, sometimes it's not easy for me to play unless I've spent some time working myself up to it beforehand. If I've been thinking about my lover, and being spanked by them, then subbing when I'm tired comes more easily because I can summon that remembered happy anticipation, inhabit it and use it to step aside from the stresses crowding my mind.

At its best, D/s does this so I don't have to - my partner's authority becomes enough to banish all other thought from my busy head. That becomes more true the more you play; you're setting up an association between your partner's dominance (expressed by voice, eyes, touch) and a meditative state of mind which allows you to focus on the moment without distraction. Religion plays the same headgame - it's psychodrama, ceremony and repetition establishing neural connections that become stronger with practice.

Play is energising, at its best; so when both of you are tired, sex or spanking can be a way to get away from it all, rejuvenate your emotional connection and stimulate body and brain with a flood of hormones and endorphines. But you need to put energy in to an experience in order to get some back out - which is more true for Doms, in some ways (or perhaps Tom's just a perfectionist). So play tends not to be the answer when you're both completely wiped.

So, on my way to the pub on Thursday, I actively put the stresses of the work day out of my mind, and enjoyed fantasising about the birthday caning I suspected I might be in for that evening. Bizarrely, the hottest idea that popped into my brain was being made to say "Happy birthday, sir!" after counting each stroke. I'm not normally into humiliation, but in that instance the silliness and embarrassment of combining birthday wishes with a difficult caning situation seemed like an intense headgame. I imagined feeling a bit like Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday, Mr President. Being commanded to do something foolish, childish, but with the focus always coming back to the Dom, to the reason for the caning, the fact that this was in celebration of their special day and I was just an accessory.

When I described my fantasy Tom laughed and told me that it would be hot for the first six strokes, but after that he would find it even more irritating than I would, and by halfway through the novelty would have worn off and we'd both be bored out of our brains. This is probably true of many of my fantasies - I love fantasising about interminable, long-term punishment scenarios in stress positions which would be physically impossible in practice (or decidedly un-erotic given my back problems).

Anyway, on the evening of his birthday itself he was too tired for more than an intimate snuggle, so I had to wait until Saturday night to be spanked. Two days is a long time in my world, and the intervening period was a whirlwind of stress, urgent deadlines, panicky clients, cancelled commitments and lack of sleep. I finally finished work at 10pm on Saturday night and trekked over to Tom's with a bagful of groceries. (I long for the day when I will not need to travel to see him, it will make everything so much more convenient.)

By the time I was lying on the bed, arse lifted over pillows, my stressed body and brain were still finding it difficult. I desperately wanted to be spanked - I knew I needed it, I'd been wanting it for days - but I was just so tired, and I'd had almost no downtime since we were last together. I had no tolerance. The strokes bit more fiercely than I'd thought possible; my breathing was all over the place. Rather than the soft, languorous responses that are elicited by a truly, masochistically erotic caning, I was hissing through my teeth, frantically sucking in breath, screwing my face up. The worst strokes made me jump up, banging my fists on the mattress. I knew it was one of the lightest canings he'd ever given me but it was really hard.

I wanted to please him; I also wanted to please the me of earlier in the week. I knew I'd regret it if I begged out of my one chance all week to be properly whipped. And when you put energy in, you get it back out. By the end of the weekend all my cares had poured away; I felt closer to Tom than I had in weeks, and was refreshed and ready to jump back into the maelstrom after the long weekend.

This isn't a question of whether I'm doing it for him, or for me. When D/s is working properly there's no difference between the two.

Tom's birthday caning

Tom gave me his birthday caning on Saturday night. 33 strokes. I was a complete wimp, I'm afraid, and yelled and cried my way through them as if they were the worst thing I'd ever felt, even though he'd gone out of his way to warm me up. I was tired, I'd just worked two twelve-hour days, it was late. But I really wanted to give him this; I'd been thinking of it all week, and I wasn't about to shy away now.

It was tough. Afterwards I felt like a complete baby. But he said he was proud of me. He said my reactions are even more enjoyable when I'm finding a scene difficult, but am struggling to be obedient anyway. So I guess that's okay, then.

Tennis Girl photographer dies

The photographer who took the famous "Tennis Girl" photo - the most published photo in the world - has died.

Martin Elliott took the photo in 1976 for an Athena calendar, and his 18-year-old girlfriend at the time, Fiona Butler, was happy to pose for it. She's been quoted as saying "I'm not at all embarrassed about that photo."

Looking at it again, I'm not sure what I like best about it: the blatant bare bottom fetishism, the quality of late-afternoon sunlight, or the corona of fine blonde hairs on her arms and legs, catching and diffusing that light in an effect that is all too rare in this age of shaved-smooth skin.
