a complete cure for OBESITY, HYSTERIA and GOUT

Tom and I have started watching Mad Men; we've only watched the first few episodes, but I'm enjoying it so far. The portrayal of 50s culture is deeply claustrophobic, and really puts paid to the claims that life is worse now than it was then - certainly in terms of social permissiveness, equality and personal freedom.

I was chatting to a friend about it last night, and said I wasn't sure how I felt yet about the character of Peggy (who I still can't stop thinking of as Zoey Bartlet). I'm not finding her crush on Pete at all convincing, as it seemed to me that her reasons for sleeping with him in the first episode were more calculating than that. My friend suggested that rather than being calculating, she probably just slept with him because she was horny, and that she liked the way the show uses Peggy to discuss female sexuality in that era. She told me about the storyline later in the series (spoiler alert!) where Peggy discovers that an electronic "weight loss" machine has secondary benefits in the form of certain vibrations. Hilariously, she then has find a way of raising the topic with her boss, a marketing exec, so he can subtly hint at the machine's other use in the advertising. I can't wait to see this :)

It reminded me of an image NSI's photographer Billy linked the other day:

Of course, no-one could come out and say "stimulates the PELVIC AREA, leaves you feeling REFRESHED and GLOWING" but they got as close as they damn well could in the circumstances. I mean, come on. How many ladies do you think would have ridden this machine side-saddle?

Someone on twitter linked this image of a more explicit Victorian vibrator, but I'm afraid I can't remember who - comment if it was you and I'll credit :)

Unfortunately, I don't think it's historically accurate. But it generates all kinds of interesting images. Imagine the sounds it would make - the hissing of steam, clunking of gears, the grinding of cogs and pumping of pistons ... Fucking machines don't interest me much in general, but a steam-powered one? Oh hell yeah.

  1. I've watched a couple of DVDs worth of Mad Men and found that I rather enjoyed the retro vibe. The story and the characters (especially) hold my interest.

Also worth watching IMHO is Californication, another cable TV show, notable for it's great writing and edgy plots, not to mention some actual spanking and BDSM play -- nothing too serious or sustained, mind you.

If it's possible to lust after a television series, then I lust after Mad Men. I love, love, love that show. (Yes, there's love amid the lust.)

There are a few really great kinky moments, too... You'll see : )

My daughter gave methe first season of Mad Men for Christmas, and it didnt take too long before I had bought and seen the second season too -- now waiting for third season to appear on dvd. There are surprising turns of events all along. And that whatshername Hendricks chief secretary, adorable. Try to walk like she does! Brilliant in casting, instruction, story, and idea/meaning.
They even show the attitude to child spanking of the period as something naturally integrated. No office spankings so far tho :-(

Actually there also appear some ghastly creepy old ladies, of the kind you should have as guest stars in your school soap. You may have seen some of them already. Inspectors from the board of education?

  5. I've been boring kinky friends rigid with how Mad Men is the kinkiest TV drama ever.

  6. Wow, looking forward to seeing the rest of it even more now I've heard all this!

So far all I've seen in the way of child spanking is the smack across the face some kid gets at the birthday party - horribly uncomfortable; it wasn't his dad that gave it to him, although his dad seemed keen to play the macho game and offer more violence to his kid to impress his mates. I hope the kinky content is a little more adult than that...

  7. I know it's pedantic, but Mad Men is set in 1960's New York (the term coming from the fact they work on Madison Avenue) rather then 50's. Interestingly, the titles are an homage to the Alfred Hitchcock films Vertigo and North by Northwest.

Any chance you could make those dark red letters on black background a bit lighter? They are almost invisble.....

Mad Men is great (I spent 3 nights in the Roosevelt Hotel, and one day there was some film shooting in the entrance/lobby - the whole place looks just like it did when it was new).
But it's not a place to nourish our kinky dispositions, it seems.
I saw a film with the same period and much the same style in lighting, acting and tempo: Hollywoodland.

  10. All the talk of adverts reminds me of the ads I used to find in junk mail Innovations-style catalogues for "facial massagers". These never quite explained why the best design for a facial massager was a straight narrow cylinder six inches long. But they did have a very satisfied woman holding the masaager next to her face.

  11. I am so enamoured with Christina Hendricks in this series it's ridiculous. And out of it too, really. I would give anything to look so utterly divine. *wistful sigh* :)

I'm very much enjoying your continued fascination with steamy steam-powered goodies...;-)
