Originality: it's not that hard
I'm well aware that practically every scenario that can be done pretty much has been in the spanking industry. For this reason my own (admittedly amibitious) commercial projects focus far more on texture and context than the scenarios themselves; creativity is much easier if you're creating a complete plot and real characters rather than a straightforward set piece.
I don't particularly object that the commercial sites tend to follow the same template in terms of design - accessibility and navigability are the main aims, and as long as it's readable and relatively easy on the eyes I don't mind much if it's not the most stylish and elegant layout ever seen. Some sites do crowd their front pages more than I personally prefer, and one rapidly tires of animated graphics shouting keywords and exclamation marks, but I'm there to look at spanking porn, not to assess their originality of design. My own site does deliberately deviate from the mould and I've had a lot of compliments about it, but it has the luxury of being a personal portfolio rather than a regularly updated commercial site with a members area. If I was creating the latter I can't guarantee that I wouldn't follow the established trend simply for efficiency's sake.
There is a limit, however. I was perusing my tracker statistics, as I do of a weekend (no, I'm not that bored: just taking a well-deserved break in a bout of spring late-summer-cleaning) and discovered the latest ad on spankme.uk. There's no name given other than "spankee", but the text is copied and pasted wholesale from my own advert and that of Natasha Louise, an associate of mine. I know that one commercial spanking model ad looks much like another, and I'm not particularly bothered, but if you're not even capable of editing someone else's text slightly, let alone composing your own, it doesn't bode well for being imaginative and innovative on camera, does it? I've sent her an email suggesting she might want to change it, but I'm not really expecting a response. This is the internet, after all: plagiarism and piracy appear to be par for the course.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the link :) I'm lucky to have escaped it as much as I have so far - I've heard of people who have had entire sites or blogs copied. It didn't irritate me that much because it was such a small thing, it's just amusing that people choose to do it when it's so obvious, and so easy to write your own words instead.

ReplyDeleteI really don't agree that everything has been done by now. I find the work of the major commercials to occupy an extremely narrow spectrum. Why are willing spankees not permitted to express themselves as just that, for example? This can be far more complex and emotionally rich than bratting, by the way. I am sure you and adele know this, but for other readers, imagine a girl who deliberately places herself under strict circumstances, where it is no joke, but nobody is forcing her either. That is an emotionally powerful experience that seems to have had very little expression on the web. Do you not agree?
In the first movie I've had released by English Spankers, I play a character who volunteers for discipline because she genuinely believes she needs it. Is this the kind of scenario you have in mind?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure it's a question of spankees not being "permitted" this option, EB, simply that the illusion of helplessness is most people's kink.
It's also worth noting that in the real world, spankees are always willing (unless they're an abuse victim, which is an entirely different issue). One of the purposes of fantasy is to provide scenarios that are beyond the real; forced CP is hot because it's the thing beyond the grasp of consensual kinksters.

ReplyDeleteThe English Spankers piece about a bully wanting to repent is not what I mean because it is self-contradictory and so unbelievable as to make a shallow and clumsy representation that very few would be in to. Many commercial sites only care about lots of pink flesh and red stripes. Fine for them, but I imagined you would focus on the human emotions and in that case there has to be emotional authenticity in the scene.
In a way I agree that "the illusion of helplessness is most people's kink" (though none of us has any real evidence). However, it is more complicated than simply 'sub is forced by dom against her will'. In my private imagination there are many layers - am I alone in that? Do you like to be beyond the point of no return, facing the stern disciplinarian who will not give you an inch? Part of the feeling is having to say to yourslef 'I should have thought of that before' - you are not in control now, but you alone are responsible for your situation. Here is the intoxicating mix of excitement, fear and bravado that makes subism so special.
Am I making any sense here?
