The truth about Victorian spanking porn

I was browsing the happytails forum today, when I came across the following statement:

There probably was spanking erotica in 1860, but it'd have been some Victorian gentleman spanking a woman in a corset, and (considering that photography was in its infancy) probably would have been a drawing.

Funnily enough, before reading this I'd already brought home a book full of Victorian spanking erotica and was intending to post some of it for you. The earliest spanking photos in the collection are from 1885, but there are hundreds of examples of erotic and nude photography dating from 1855, most of which display softly curved bellies, deadpan expressions, and great tufts of pubic hair. Petticoats aplenty, but surprisingly, not so many corsets.

And by 1885, spanking photos appear to have been pretty common: mostly showing F/f spanking with both participants nude, but sometimes also including men, as in these two birching images:

The first one is a rather implausible position for whipping someone (if he's aiming for her back, her hair's in the way) but perhaps she's just been chastised, and the two of them are now bringing their desires to their natural conclusion? Or maybe the pose is intended to demonstrate the couple's habitual domestic practice: birch-wielding man, happy woman (seems fair enough to me).

It does also seem as if stripy socks have been a staple of spanking porn since its very inception. Fantastic! I've been wearing them for ages anyway, but now it turns out that by doing so I'm continuing a grand and noble tradition :)
